Patents – Chinese and Brazilian Applications
Under the PCT
Source: Infomail ABREU, MERKL no. 24
The Patent Cooperation Treaty
(PCT) is a system that provides to inventors and to
the industry an advantageous route for obtaining patent
protection internationally. Currently, there are 139
member states to the PCT.
During the last 30
(thirty) years, the largest number of international
applications under the PCT has been of inventors from
the United States of America, with 53,521 applications
(32.7% of the total) in the year of 2008. However, 2008
was the first year in which a Chinese company ranked
top first in the list by applicant, with a total of
1,737 PCT applications, followed by a Japanese company
(1,729) and a Dutch company (1,551).
From 2007 to 2009,
Brazil increased the number of international applications
from 396 to 451*. Notwithstanding the significative
raise, unfortunately this total number of applications
is still small when compared to the total number of
one single Chinese company.
