Source: INPI/BR [Adapted]

Even with the economic crisis that hit the world since the end of 2008, Brazil showed an increase of 1,6% in patent applications via the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) last year, reaching 480 applications, according to estimates made by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The PCT facilitates the applications abroad by allowing them to reach several countries from a first filing made in Brazil, for example.

With the dissemination efforts made by the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and the increasing interest of the Brazilians in patenting, the country maintained its growth tendency and contradicted the international average, which registered a fall of 4,5% last year. Since 2000, Brazilian applications abroad have already grown 169%.

Brazil has stood out among the developing countries, since nations such as Russia and India also showed a decrease. In this group, Brazil ranked in fifth with the highest number of applications, following South Korea (8066), China (7946), India (761) and Singapore (594).

Since a patent is only valid in the countries where it is granted, patenting abroad is fundamental so that Brazilian companies may conquer new markets and raise national exportations. So much as the increase of Brazilian applications abroad is one of the main goals of the Productive Development Policy (PDP) of the Federal Government.
