>[17.Aug.09] Trademarks
– Madrid Agreement under discussion
Source: INPI/BR [Adapted]
The discussions about
the convenience of Brazil’s adhesion to the Madrid
Agreement are in a quite developed state and this would
be the ideal moment for the approval of the proposal,
which will be now forwarded to Congress. This is the
perception that resulted from the debates that took
place, on 11.Aug.2009, in the House of Deputies, between
specialists, parliamentarians and industry representatives
about the agreement that facilitates the registration
of trademarks in other countries.
According to the sub director-general
of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO),
Brazil is the fifth country in number of trademark registrations,
being only behind China, United States, Japan and Korea.
Nonetheless, the country is still not a signatory of
the Madrid Agreement.
The importance of this international
trademark registration application system for Brazilian
exports was highlighted by the secretary of Industrial
Technology of the Ministry of Development, Industry
and Foreign Trade (MDIC), and by the business manager
of the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency
(APEX), for whom a more expressive international presence
of Brazilian trademarks will represent a great advance
for the national economy.
