>[14.Apr.10] Trademarks – Increase in trademarks applications from small companies
Source: INPI/BR [Adapted]

Trademark applications filed by small entrepreneurs has increased in the last three years in Brazil. As a reflex of the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) policy, which created discounts and made internet filing available, the increase reached 100% in some cases.

Among micro companies, the most representative group, applications increased in 21% from 2007 to 2009. Among cooperatives, the indexes had a variation of 101% and, among small-size companies, applications increased in 83%. Still in the same period, in the midst of the international economic crisis, applications from legal entities fell 5,2%.

One of the determining factors for this result was the creation of the e-Marcas system, in 2006, which allows for internet filing. In 2009 alone, 68,3% of trademark applications were filed through e-Marcas.

INPI’s discount policy is also to be highlighted, since cooperatives and small and micro companies have up to 60% discount on the fees charged by the institute.
