On 18.Dec.2009, the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) came to its end. The event took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, and focused on discussing the current climate changes and possible solutions.

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) participated in a series of COP15 side events, and at one of these events with the theme “International Cooperation on Technology Transfer: Time for Action”, he gave a speech stating that Intellectual Property (IP) has an important role in green innovation. By being the biggest public repository of up-to-date technology, the patent system not only provides a significant amount of information through the publication of filed applications, but it can also guarantee the right of protection and potential commercialization of the knowledge developed.

The Director General also pointed out that IP has a big part to play in technology policies, and that investments in the development of environment-friendly technologies and their rapid dissemination must be a priority. Through the transferring of new technologies, aided by a solid IP system, inventors can earn back the investments they made in green innovation. Hence, making the process for obtaining a green patent easier will consequently stimulate new developments in this area.
