Insofar the trade relations between Brazil and China have been increasing, IP becomes an important topic of discussion for the two countries. In this context, a delegation formed by the vice president and other members of the State Intellectual Property Office – SIPO (China’s Patent Office) was welcomed at the Brazilian PTO (INPI/BR), on 17.May.2011, for an official visit to enhance the cooperation between the two countries in the IP field.

Comparing the data of the two countries, the figures are surprising: the total number of applications in China in 2010 surpassed the 1 million mark, including inventions, utility models and industrial design. In Brazil, the number of patent applications should reach 30 thousand this year.

Although the difference in the numbers is large, both offices are on the same path. SIPO has already set up the online patent system and has 60% of its patent applications filed electronically. The introduction of the e-Patents for INPI’s external users should take place early next year.

Moreover, the countries also discussed cooperation actions in patent examination and development of new tools of information technology. It has been a first step in a relationship that is likely to keep growing in the coming years.
