At the “Meeting on Integration of Industrial Property into the Social and Economic Development Policies of the South American Countries ”, INPI’s President defended the creation of a common platform of systems and databases and cooperation in examination procedures. The event took place in Buenos Aires, on 7-8.Aug.2008.

The INPI emphasized the need for the South American offices to broaden access to the industrial property system for the citizens. In order to provide more participation, the strategy has been to improve the information technology system and intensify the hiring and training of examiners. The efficiency of such measures, however, becomes compromised by the high costs and the long term nature of such objectives.

In this sense, added INPI’s president, it would be more productive to create common platforms of databases and systems to be shared by all offices taking part in the project. Likewise, the effective cooperation on examination procedures, adding distinct efforts, would strengthen the united character of the participating countries.

The representative for the Inter-American Bank for Development – BID - said that it was time to take the project to the next level, moving past the phase of concept discussion. This factor is associated with the chances for success of a financial support fund administrated by BID, called Regional Public Fund. Such fund receives from 80 to 90 proposals per year, approving from 10 to 15 projects in each selecting process.
