Indications - GI fundamental for the state
of Tocantins

The Secretary of Culture
of the Tocantins state, Ms Kátia Rocha, met with
INPI’s president to highlight the importance of
Geographical Indications for the state. President Jorge
Ávila, in his turn, reinforced the region’s
huge potential.
Created in 1988, the state has been working
on building its own identity and sees GIs as a powerful
tool. The request for a Geographical Indication for
Jalapão’s golden grass, typical of that
region, has been the first step. Besides protecting
local producers and artisans, the goal is to create
a differential, guaranteeing the product’s quality
and competitiveness.
The golden grass, used in the production
of costume jewelry and decoration articles, is a rather
unique product. According to the Secretary, even the
color intensity of the material depends on when it is
harvested. The Jalapão region lies approximately
300 km from Palmas, the state’s capital.
But Tocantins’ treasures do not
end at that. The city of Nativity, located in the southeast
region, is known as the gold town, with a major production
of jewelry. The crystal from Cristalândia, 150
km from Palmas, and the bean seeds, cultivated in the
flooded areas around Lagoa da Confusão, a little
over 200 km from the capital, also account for the region’s
attractions.
