The coffee producers of the Cerrado” Region of the Minas Gerais State had given one more step in the direction of the register of Geographic Indication.

The Brazilian National Industrial Property Office – INPI/BR granted the order for register and, with the recognition conferred for the technician of the Institute, guaranteed for the Brazilian law (Law nº 9.279/96 - art. 176), the manufacturers of coffee of the related region will have exclusiveness on the name that identifies the origin of the product.

The certificate is also a form to add value and credibility to a product or service. For the exporters, it works as a market differential because of the qualities associates to determined regions. In accordance with specialists, the coffee from Cerrado” Region of the Minas Gerais State detaches for the soft flavor and chocolate aroma.

The main cities that produces the coffee from Cerrado” Region of the Minas Gerais State are Araguari, Indianópolis, Aimorés, Monte Carmelo, Patrocínio, São Gotardo, Coromandel and Araxá. In the 70’s, the coffee culture was the preponderant factor, for the development of these cities. The ground of the region is argillaceous and the topography favors the mechanization of the coffee farmings.

The Register of Geographic Indication that will to the Cerrado” Region of the Minas Gerais State is the second to be recognized by the INPI. In 2002 the “Vale dos Vinhedos” at the Rio Grande do Sul State, got this certificate of quality that consolidates the associated image to the excellence regions in the production of wines, as Bordeaux and Champagne, in France, or Rioja, in Spain.
