>[13.Jul.11] Geographical
Indications - PTO grants GI for Jalapão’s
golden grass
Source: INPI
The Brazilian PTO
published, on July 12, 2011, the granting of Geographical
Indication, in the form of Indication of Source, for
Jalapão’s golden grass handicraft (TO),
used to make bags, bowls, jewelry boxes and other pieces.
From the publication date, the Association
of Artisans in Golden Grass, from the Region of Jalapão
in the Tocantins state, has 60 days to prove, before
the Brazilian PTO, the payment of the fee provided for
issuing the Certificate of Registration.
If this is done, this will be the
tenth Brazilian Geographical Indication, next to the
Region of Cerrado Mineiro (MG), for coffee, Valley of
the Vineyards (RS), for wine; Pampa Gaúcho Southern
Campaign (RS) for meat, Paraty (RJ), for rum; Submédio
Valley San Francisco (BA/PE) for table grapes and mango;
Vale do Sinos (RS), leather, Pinto Bandeira (RS) for
wines; Minas Gerais’ Region of Serra da Mantiqueira
(MG), for coffee, and North Coast Gaucho (RS) for rice.
A Geographical Indication is
a certification that guarantees the suitability of the
product and its quality. Thus, it becomes a competitive
advantage for its owners. An example is the Valley of
the Vineyards (RS). The Valley, which has IG since 2002,
had a big boost in tourism (which has grown over 300%
during this period) and in the local production (the
number of wineries has grown from 15 to 31).
