>[13.Jul.10] Geographical Indications – Brazil obtains another GI for wines
Source: INPI/BR [Adapted]

Brazil has just obtained its seventh Geographical Indication (GI): Pinto Bandeira, for red, white and sparkling wines. The certificate grant, which is an important factor in guaranteeing the quality and differentiation of the products, was formalized by the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) on 13.Jul.2010.

Pinto Bandeira, located in the Bento Gonçalves area – RS (extreme South of Brazil), joins other six Brazilian GIs granted by the INPI: Região do Cerrado Mineiro - MG (Southeast region), for coffee; Vale dos Vinhedos - RS, for red, white and sparkling wines; Pampa Gaúcho da Campanha Meridional – RS, for beef and derivatives; Paraty – RJ (Southeast region), for cachaça and blue blended aguardente (typical Brazilian spirits); Vale do Submédio São Francisco - BA/PE (Northeast region), for mangoes and table grapes; and Vale do Sinos - RS, for finished leather.

It should be noted that the interest of Brazilians for Geographical Indication is ever growing. Proof thereof is that, in 2008, out of the four applications filed with the INPI, two came from nationals of this country and two from foreigners. In 2009, the number of applications rose to eleven, seven from Brazilians and four foreign applications.
