Geographic Indication – Northern Brazil
fruit earns GI
Source: INPI/BR [Adapted]
Brazil has just earned
its sixth geographical indication (GI): it is Vale do
Submédio São Francisco, for table grapes
and mangoes. The certificate was granted by the Brazilian
National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI/BR),
on 07.Jul.2009, to the Council of the Union of Associations
and Cooperatives of Producers of Table Grapes and Mangoes
of the São Francisco Valley (Univale).
Located between the states
of Bahia and Pernambuco, the Valley concentrates the
biggest center of irrigated fruit production, which
is also one of the main mangoes exporters in South America.
This was the first geographic indication for products
of the Northeast Region.
With that, Vale do Submédio
São Francisco joins the group of Brazilian regions
that have already earned a GI: Vale dos Sinos (RS),
for finished leather; Vale dos Vinhedos (RS), for wines;
Região do Cerrado Mineiro (MG), for coffee; Pampa
Gaúcho da Campanha Meridional (RS), for bovine
meat; and Paraty (RJ) for cachaça.
