Source: INPI [adapted]

The INPI/BR has granted another two Geographical Indications: the shrimps of the Costa Negra, in the Ceará state; and the sweets of Pelotas, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The granting was published on the INPI/BR Official Gazette of 09.Aug.11.

With these two registrations, the number of Brazilian products certified by the Geographical Indication will increase to thirteen. The certification protects the products from eventual counterfeiting, guaranteeing their origin and increasing their competitiveness.

The Costa Negra shrimp, cultivated in artificial ponds in the towns of Acaraú, Itarema and Cross (Northeast of Brazil), will be the 2nd product certified in the form of an Appelation of Origin. Although it is a native species of the Pacific Ocean, its cultivation has been adapted to the conditions of the area, having also received support from the Federal University of Ceará. The product has specific features and qualities, such as a high protein content and a slightly sweet taste, due to the geographical characteristics of the region, including soil and water, and human factors, such as its own cultivation techniques.

The granting of the sweets from Pelotas, a town situated about 250 kilometers from Porto Alegre, capital city of Rio Grande do Sul (extreme South of Brazil), was in the form of an Indication of Source. The characteristics of the region’s soil encouraged the planting of fruit trees such as peaches, quinces, among others, which were firstly used for the production of jams and later for the manufacture of sweets. Encompassing 15 sweets, from fine sweets to fruit based ones, the Certificate will ensure the exclusivity of the products, whose recipes date back to the 19th century.
