>[05.dec.06] Geographical
Indications - "Champagne" is the
1st GI protected by OAPI
Source: INPI-FR (adapted)
The African Intellectual Property
Organization (OAPI) meets regularly to discuss several
subjects relating to the industrial property. The OAPI
is an integrated regional system that reaches 16 African
countries.
The last meeting was
about the protection of geographical indications.
This way, the inter-professional Committee of Wines
from the Champagne region (CIVC) will be able to profit
from the first community register procedure by OAPI
since the "Champagne" designation of origin
is the first geographical indication protected in all
16 Member States of the OAPI.
A regional seminar
on geographical indications is foreseen to happen in
2007, in Yaounde, capital of Cameroon and headquarters
of the OAPI, in which the organization will take part
together with the CIVC.
