>[02.Jun.09] Geographical Indications – Certificate for Vale dos Sinos Leather
Source: INPI/BR [Adapted]

Brazil has just earned its fifth geographical indication (GI): Vale dos Sinos (RS), for finished leather. The certificate was granted by the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI/BR), on 19.May.2009, to the Tannery Industry Association of Rio Grande do Sul. About 40% of the processed skin production in Brazil – 45 millions of skins – are from Vale dos Sinos. It should be appreciated that it is the first non-agriculture related Geographical Indication of Brazil, for the leather is industrialized. This is a specificity of the Brazilian legislation, since Europe, for example, only grants GIs for agri-food products and wines.

Besides the finished leather in Vale dos Sinos, the following are also protected with Geographical Indications: Vale dos Vinhedos (RS), for wines; Região do Cerrado Mineiro (MG), for coffee; Pampa Gaúcho da Campanha Meridional (RS), for bovine meat; and Paraty (RJ) for cachaça.
